Tobacco is a crop that needs much care not just at the field or after Harvest, but from seedbeds to to point of sales. Any recklessness might result into a loss.

Make sure you do the following best practices

At the nursery

  • Sow on motherbeds
  • Reset onto reset beds or polytubes
  • Apply recommended crop protective agents to protect the seedlings from aphids and ants
  • Harden your seedlings by reducing water

At the field

  • Plant with enough moisture
  • Plant hardened seedlings
  • Apply crop protective agent
  • Use recommended fertilizer and fertilizer rates
  • Control weeds.
  • Re do your ridges (banding) in order to raise your ridge. This promotes root development which in turn increases nutrient uptake thereby increasing growth rate.
  • Have enough curing space (barns)
  • Top your tobacco and apply recommended suckeride for your area.
  • Reap ripe leaf only, 2 leaves at a time.

At the Barn/storage

  • Don't overpack at the barn
  • Avoid Non tobacco related material from getting into your tobacco.
  • Reduce sand getting into tobacco

Grading and sales

  • Reduce sand and non tobacco related material
  • Avoid over conditioning tobacco because it gets mouldy when baled.
