Dear Abigail,

Thank you for your good question.

As you  may know, youth unemployment is a seroius issue in many African countries. Skilling the youth in Agricultural skills is one of thje ways youth unemployment can be tackled. For this cause, many development organisations are working to interest and skill the youth in Agriculture.

There are alot of opportunities for the youth in the area of Post-Harvest Management (PHM). AFAAS is implementing PHM in Benin and Mozambique, and many youths are turning into Agripreneurs in the intervention areas. AFAAS has developed many materials that can be used by you to champion the youth cause in Agriculture. Please join the Post-Harvest Management group and access many of these materials that are being uploaded to the site.

In addition you can find collaborations and partners in this area on this site. My suggestion is that you make a  writeup what you do or a proposal/concept on what you intend to do with the youth in Agriculture and sell it in the opportunities page on this site. This will be accessed and read by many development practitioners, that are on this site.

I wait to see your response,

My best regards,

Jerry

i have a practical experience of youths coming together to transform local products in to other forms. in this case local youth organizations with very limited resources gave in their best to see that youths move forward. Organizations initiated by youths are really working very well towards helping youths to become entrepreneurs through trainings in agro-pastoral entrepreneurship. when youths come out of such trainings, the drive to be entrepreneurs is very high.

Last week a group of youths were involved in cocoa beans transformation in to products that could stay longer and add value up to about three times the value of the raw product. cocoa was transformed to sweets, chocolates (solid, semi liquid and powdered forms), cocoa butter (cocoa oil) and there are still possibilities of transforming into tablets (medicines), bathing soap, rubbing oil...this is done by youths and for youths.

you just get in touch with such organizations and you will be drilled properly based on the experience i have personally had in cameroon so far. Sometimes such organizations get youths informed about funding opportunities and how to go about them.

best regards

Njah
